Project suggestions for CS 4033/5033 Fall 2011
The following list of project suggestions is intended to get your project ideas started. Please feel free to come up with your own project ideas as well! Also, feel free to take one of these projects and modify it. Please examine all of the previous years' suggestions for even more project ideas because this only gives new ideas that didn't exist last year.
Predicting Wind Energy
- The AI committee at the annual AMS meeting has a contest every year on using the best AI/ML methods to predict an interesting weather task. This year's task is to predict the energy produced by one of the largest windfarms in the US.
- The data is drawn from the real world - it comes from an actual windfarm in Colorado.
- There is a monetary prize associated with winning this contest!
Gaming
- Gaming is popular every year! Pick your favorite game where exhaustive search is NOT a feasible approach to solving the game. Look for an existing simulator (I don't want you spending time writing a simulator!) and then propose a way to incorporate learning into the game. Most often this takes the form of making an AI player.
- We have an existing simulator for roborally, spacewar, pacman, and mancala. This is available here.
- We have access to a simulator with the following models/games. If they interest you, let Dr McGovern know.
- VacuumWorld (AIMA)
- Tic Tac Toe
- Reversi
- Lights Out
- Minesweeper
- Wumpus World (AIMA and a Graph-based version)
- 8/15-Puzzle
Charge Car
- Carnegie Mellon University has been collecting data on electric and non-electric cars. Their goal is to intelligently predict the usage of a car so that a more economical electric car can be made available. This car uses a supercapacitor instead of the large quantity of batteries in existing electric cars. They have collected data from real cars doing real commutes across the US and they have a contest running on predicting the charge. The data and information about the contest can be found here.
